I love mine, that i just got!My first REAL light .Why does S.F rate them so low?I've read many post saying they are anywhere from 170-200+ lumens!!!And i believe it.Just curious.

The most likely reason is that Surefire under-rates their lights and that the lumen output that they include on their specification sheets is the minimum i.e. if they say the E2DL can output 120 lumens on high they mean the E2DL on high will output at least 120 lumens out the front of the light.

Welcome to CPF and congratulations on your first SureFire purchase. Good Job on a great light.

Most manufacturers measure their lumens at the emiter before losses like the reflector are factored in. SureFire measures their Lumens out the front of the light after all the losses have been accounted for, along with what deranged_coder said it does seem to make their lumen claims very conservative.

Welcome to CPF.

ENJOY!

I also believe that Surefire uses half depleted or already used batteries to power their lights when testing lumen output. This may help give a more conservative rating.

Yeah, the E2DL is a scorcher. It really is putting out approx 160 lumens or higher, and that's a real measurement of the output as measured in real world, not an "optimistic" spec.

I also have a E1B which puts out a true 80 lumens, and I wasn't expecting the E2DL to be much brighter since it usually takes a doubling of lumens for your eye to really notice the difference, and when I turned on the E2DL for the first time, it was definitely noticeable, so it really must be putting out more than 120lm

I think Surefire may be underestimating it just to be safe that no light they produce will fall short of the spec.

I agree. It's underrated. The only light I have that is very much brighter is my Eagletac T10C2. But I wonder if the E2DL seems brighter because of the optics. I think it concentrates the beam more. Just eyeball observation though....

IIRC they use the minimal out the front lumen as their rating. That means you will get at least the stated output.

Also the fact that much of the light is in the hotspot can also make it seem brighter. If they used a reflector the light might not seem as bright because much more of the output will be in the spill instead of the hotspot.

Glad you like it!
