OK what is an easy, cheap and bright mag mod I could do on a 2D mag.

Don't take batteries into cosideration. I already have a 2D to 6AA battery Ni-hm pack figured out... I would like something that is at least 500 lumens. I would prefer something 1000+ if possible, perhaps slightly overdrive the bulb. So, 6AA's @ 1.3v = 7.8v - any resistance. So I'm thinking a 6V bulb would be good?

Also, I'm in Taiwan so I'd have to get something locally or something from KD or DX or some place that cheaply ships internationally.

Would I need to replace the stock reflector? Please tell me what I would need to buy. I'm lookoing to do this as cheap as possible... $10... $20... $30... not much more than that. It does not have to look beautiful or anything. As far as runtime... I'm shooting for more than 20 minutes. I have Sanyo 2500 mah cells and 2100's. Each cell would be realistically ~ 2.5Whrs. So 2.5x6=15whrs. So most likely a bulb in the 15-30W range would be good...

Thanks...

you can get a pack of ROP bulbs. they are two one with LOW and one with HIGH output. the most powerful is about 500L or more...

you can get a cheap reflector from KD (kaidomain) and do not forget the glass lens! the stock one may melt down....

To keep things really cheap, simply using a 5 or 6 cell mag xenon bulb with the 6 cell pack will give you a semi- impressive mod with about 2 hours runtime. It won't be killer bright, but it will be substancially brighter than stock, the advantage to this is that you don't have to replace the reflector or lens, so you can knock a big chunk of the cost off of the mod.

The ROP low can also be used on the stock reflector and lens, but only in short runs, like under 1 minute each. It's a pretty impressive little bulb, throws like crazy in a smooth mag reflector.

There's no substitute for volts.

Looking for a convenient work light with adjustable beam, I picked up the Rayz 2D swivel light. With the stock 2D cells however it was disappointingly dim and flickery. On connecting the bulb directly to the batteries the bulb was very bright, but inside the light there are too many steel springs and mechanical connections, all of which sap power from the bulb when installed in the normal way.

So, out came the 2D cells and in went 6AA Eneloops in AA-to-D adapters. Out came the stock bulb and in went a K12 krypton bulb. Suddenly the light was transformed. The dim yellow beam became a bright, white, focusable spot to flood. All trace of flickering had disappeared.

Now OK, this is no ROP, but it is more than enough light for changing a wheel beside the road or finding your way round a dark closet.

Dirt simple (and cheap!) Mag mod:
two 3AA-D adapters from Kaidomain: about $3 total.
One 6D MagNum Star OEM bulb from Mag: $2 or so at Home Depot.

Seeing the shock on someone's face when their bedside lamp goes from 30 to 225 lumens: priceless.

Oh, and BTW I was just thinking about modding a spot light I have instead. I think the 6V battery is dead inside. I could open it up and throw 8-16AA's in there easily. The spotlight is rated at 1.5M candle power and has a 6V 50W bulb (halogen) bulb. Anyone have any guess at how many lumens that is at full brightness? Also, since It is a high powered bulb I assume the lens is glass and reflector is substantial to withstand a lot of heat.

What bulb would someone recommend? Thanks!

With 16 AAs you could overdrive a 12 V 50 W halogen quite nicely. One of the 2000 hour ones used for home lighting will have a lot of scope for higher brightness/shorter life if you run it above 12 volts.

on the stock battery those spoghtlights with the 55W H3 bulbs will tend to be around 1000 bulb lumen give or take, A little bit of overdrive and it could be 1800+

I am in fairly similar situation to you. Being in Asia KD and DX seems to be a good alternatif despite its so-so reputation.

I moded my 2D using a soldered 6 pack Sanyo 2700 and running Osram 64250 bulb or 64275 but Osram 275 is really expensive so i stick with 250 nice and alot bright compared to stock 2D.
