Heya *@*,
I finally decided to see what all the fuss with high CRI LEDs is about and got a brandnew SSC P4 S42182 (TT1S0H bin) over at the marketplace (thanks, etherealshade).
As a host I picked my trusty HDS EDC U60 XR with 18650 battery compartment.
^^Taking the light apart was not that easy, because ...
^^... as you can see in this picture, I have a very old version of the HDS EDC with a fixed reflector. I had to disassemble it via the 2 little holes in the PCB near the "+" contact. Of course I slipped a few times with the needle nose pliers and scratched the PCB up quite a bit. :shakehead
Getting the SSC P4 off of its star was easier than I anticipated. I pre-heated an electric oven plate for 2-3 minutes, grabbed the LED housing with pliers, pushed down the star to the plate with another set of pliers and it came off in ~5 seconds, just like in this video from some other guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FJmt2Fgzr4
^^Henry meant well with the thermal paste.
^^Cleaned up module with the Luxeon III and presumeably Henry's handwriting.
^^Desoldered Lux III and SSC P4, module (almost) ready for install. And yes, that's a tissue of toilet paper. :nana:
^^I knew it was a good idea to buy the larger syringe with Arctic cooling MX-2 back a few years ago. I placed quite a big blop in the middle and spread it out with a toothpick. I also put MX-2 inside the head of the HDS and around the upper rim of the module. Sorry, forgot to take a picture of that.
^^Probably not the best soldering job, but ...
^^...it seems to work!
^^It's alive! :naughty:
These were shot with auto whitebalance, the light is, of course, a lot further on the warm/yellow side of the spectrum.
This mod took me about two hours altogether and I'm quite happy with the HDS .. again. Brightness is hard to judge, I have to compare it further with other lights - but I think it's somewhere around 110 lumens.
Hope you enjoy,
-Connor
PS: My thanks go to "derfyled", who helped me out with some useful hints on this mod. lovecpf
