Hello all,

I have been doing some reading here and you guys seem to really know your stuff.

Well, here it is.

I need a headlamp for my fishing trip upcoming. I would like something with throw to flood option (diffuser or something). I would also like red leds or red diffuser. Is one better than the other as far as red led or red diffuser?

I was looking at these so far and would like to stay around 50 or less

I think I may like something without the battery pack on the back but I am not completly against the pack if it's not to heavy.

I will be walking through the woods/trails as well as night fishing.

I want soemthing that puts out a good amount of light but also doesn't chew through the batteries to bad.

Thoughts?

No experience with the particular Remington model that you linked to. So, no comment on it other than to say that 2xAAA is not a preferred power source if brightness and/or burntime is of significant importance to you.

I own and like the Hardcase. It's a nice HL which is appropriate for a wide range of uses. Finding a source can be a bit difficult. I purchased mine here

for well under your $50 limit.

i have energizer 1w headlamp, it also has 2 5mm leds for flood, and 2 5mm red leds. i use this light on every camping\fishing trip. i like it has good throw and nice flood, it is a bit on a heavy side, but not that heavy. for the price (i paid $25 iirc, at walmart) it is a great light. i would recomend it, and it wont brake your pocket if lost, or drowned.

Thanks for the info. Info on the Remington is hard to find. I wonder if that one is new.

I also wonder how many lumens it's really putting out. They say 80, and if it was anywhere near that, it would be plenty I think.

Since you have the hard case, can you provide some feedback on how comfortable it is. Could you cast, walk over uneven ground, ect without it getting uncomfortable? Do you always know you have it on? My old small PT I had, you would almost forget you had it on it was so comfortable. I bet it's nowhere near as bright though.

How does the red led work for that one. Would it be good in a boat at night for basic tasks?

Are alkaline batteries the best to use for this? Can you use rechargeable? how about lithium

I have 4 of the energizer headlites for nighttime fishing trips and am very satisfied with their performance for that purpose.

Depends on your style really. It's a utility / construction light for me, too big for the kinds of out-door activities I do and I'd never pack it.
However, with the drop-rating, it's probably durable enough (I haven't abused mine at all)

Could you cast, walk over uneven ground, ect without it getting uncomfortable?

Sure, comfy enough (though, i'm an ex-judoka so I've got a thick neck), no concerns with wearability or usability. I've crawled sideways and a little upside down wearing the headlamp, all good.

The colour led's are good, very nice with the diffuser too. Problem with using hardcase outdoors is that the main is too bright. Main goes full and medium. If you were gonna use it in a boat you'd be sticking to red and green (not a problem as long as you can identify your gear (fishing tackle?)properly in coloured light) IMHO your partner's would toss you over if you lit up the main beam and killed their night vision (main also cycles full then medium...useless) But then maybe your partners like using a bit o light all the time (or have running lights on the boat and lighting up the main is no big deal). I go mostly by moonlight so for me the hardcase is completely inappropriate for wilderness.

You'll want to put some electrical tape along the edge of the diffuser to keep it from reflecting the edge of the beam into your face when it is not in use.

I went with the hard case. Can't wait to get it and play around with it before the trip.

I must say I am a little nervous about the size and weight since the only other ones I have had have been the smaller 3 aaa loaded in the front style.

on another note I am also getting a Duracell daylite cr-123 160 lumen light to take as well.

I can't seem to figure out if i can use rechargeable and if so, what kind of charger and batteries I should get.

I have a thread in the battery section but no one has answered yet.

Would it use something from here? http://www.batteryjunction.com/recrbachrc.html

or can you not use rechargeable?

sorry i didn't get back here in time to reply to you.

fortunately, others did address your questions.

not being a fisherman, their responses are better than any i could have offered to you.

enjoy the headlamp.

I don't know if theses are still at Walmart but its decent enough and affordable.

Here some discussion:

It has a built in diffuser that swivels and it has a red LED. The runtime may be a tad short but changing the single AA battery is easier than changing multiple AAA batteries. I can pull out a battery from my pocket and change it with my eyes closed. It is also very light on the head.

Sprawl-Mart quit carrying the ROV-1xAA a long time back, well over a year ago, at least in the southeast. The regularly ~ $18 lights were going for under $10, but I missed the clearance. Still, I bought more online for the kids and as loaners (5) as I agree, these are good little lights for a decent price. Online price is around $20.

Thanks for all the replies guys,

I will post when I get the hard case. It has already been shipped:D
