EDITED 11/1/08 : I have received EXCELLENT service from lighthound, they very truely deserve thier rep, the following mearly reflects the day itself that this problem happened

Original post:

I am royally pissed, I am not saying its anyones fault really but...

My EMS package from lighthound came today, and my P1D Leef body was in it along with other stuff.

Sooo,i happily put in An E2 CR123A, and screw on the head of my P1D-CE Q5. It doesnt come on. Not only that, it was tight screwing in, and now, IT DOESNT COME OUT! my hands are raw from trying...

I get my dad's helpe, we use a wrench and a clamp, the thing might as well be GLUED ON. You know what, its so tight, that when i tried to unscrew it, THE LOCTITE SEALED HEAD OF THE P1D came off instead, so now the PILL is stuck. So not only Do the Leef body half eat my P1D head, it voided the warranty too....

Like i said, i am extremely unhappy, and i need to do something about this, the leef body now has raw alu showing through becase of the clamp, EVEN THOUGH I PUT A CLOTH IN BETWEEN...

HELP!!!!!

Crenshaw

ps: i am sorry if this is uncharateristically emotional of me, but like i said, I am very very unhappy, my P1D-CE Q5 is my favourite light, AND i paid extra for the fastest shipping lighthound has apart from UPS...

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

Did you apply lubricant before you put on the body? I believe lighthound advises customers to do that in order to prevent galling...

It sounds like the threads have galled (fyi, galling is a cold welding phenomenon).

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

No i didnt, and i didnt see that warning anywhere...

But erm, i live on the equator, granted my air conditioning is on, but still....

I think you are more likely to get Leef's attention if you PM or e-mail him.

CPF is not a paging service, and in any case it is more sensible to raise any problems you have with a product direct with the manufacturer (in this case, Leef) or with the dealer from whom you acquired the item (Lighthound).

I will leave this thread open so that you can post here again after you have contacted one or other of them and can report what they have to say.

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

Many of the BigLeef system parts on LightHound do have the following warning:

"LUBRICATION Please do not assemble this body to any part without some lubrication on the threads. Galling can occur on completely un-lubricated threads."

However, I just looked at the page for the P1D offering and it doesn't include that caution.

Whenever you are assembling items and "it was tight screwing in" and you don't know why, STOP!
Especially with aluminum, it's soft and deforms easily.

Well, at least you have access to the LED for upgrade now.

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

I really don't like twisty lights. I got a P1D Q5 cause of how much people on here rave about them. I don't think I've ever carried my P1D with me. That body looks nice, but I don't wanna spend $40. :candle:

That sucks Crenshaw. =\

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

I should take this occasion to clarify the correct procedure in such cases. Please communicate with Lighthound about such issues. If, in fact, there are problems caused by defective Leef parts, the Hound will replace the parts.

My experience with the Hound is that he'll bend over backwards to help.

Any aluminum part should be lubricated before assembly, especially a finely fitted part such as the Leef body. In any case, I'm really sorry that you've had a problem. :(

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

The main reason I'm a member here is to learn stuff, and I've learned a lot. I'm sure others like me will learn something from your experience. I hope you get the problem resolved.

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

I'm sure Mr. Lighthound will help you out. Still a bummer though. But they have a great rep as a dealer, I wouldn't worry.

Once aluminum parts seize together it is very difficult (e.g. next to impossible) to get them apart intact.

However, here is something you can try. Heat the assembly hot enough so you can't pick it up with bare hands. Then squirt the threaded joint with WD-40. Be generous with the WD-40. Repeat this several times and then try to remove the head again.

The idea is to heat the joint to loosen its mechanical connection - actually in the case of galling, a molecular connection! - and "absorbing" the WD-40 into the threads by capillary action. So you need a lot of heat.

In this case, WD-40 is the preferred penetrant unless you have access to Kroil. 3-in-1 or most oils will not work here.

Good luck, and look at it this way, you've been wanting to Duracoat your new Leef body anyway! (Every cloud has a silver lining.)

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

PB blaster works much better than WD40 on rusted threads, so try that too I guess.

actually never mind, I don't think it's avaliable in singapore.

Thanks Leef, have contacted lighthound already via email last night, including a link to this thread, other then this problem i must say that the Leef P1D body looks really good, but i think my McClicky might be malfunctioning, its the reason i tightened it up so tight in the first place, i thought it wasnt making contact...:shakehead

Scott.cr, thanks, ill wait for hound's reply before doing anything, its sitting in a box all of its own on my shelf right now, im actually kind of worried that the seemingly faulty swtich that was the first problem might be shorting out or something, and might cause the thing to explode...:faint:

that wont be pretty.....

Jzmtl, i guess that IS a silver lining, i just gotta look reeeeally hard...:candle:
lol....hey look, aluminium IS shiny....:eek:oo:

Yes, i guess we can take this as a learning experience, always always always lube first, and if its feels wrong, it probably is...

I guess my new LOD might have to wait....

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

Looks like you're already for a mod there Crenshaw.........:naughty:

In all seriousness, that kind of stuff isn't much fun. Sorry that you had problems. As you can see, Leef and Lighthound were quick to the rescue. That's a good price on that body too. It's kinda got me thinking....

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

Can not understand completely, I am learning experience, too,, :):):):):) I do agree with that you need to contact the seller first when you meet a problem....it's much better....

Re: LEEF! i need your help! and anyone else that can help me!

have been thinking ( nothing speculative)
the problem might be the body opening is a bit too small for the fenix head.
