Lightforce SL240 VS Polarion PH40 (or whatever the brightest is..)

Hi,

My query is, how do you think the Polarion would match up to my Lightforce SL240?

I own the lightforce, and have seen beamshots of the Polarion, and my guess would be that on a tight spot the SL240 would throw further, however, overall the Polarion would put out more lumens, and a cleaner beam...

Anyone ever been lucky enough to see both? Is my guess way off??

Oneday when i'm rich and famouse, if I was to buy a polarion and find soon after that my Lightforce (for 1/8th the price) was brighter i would be a bit disapointed....

Of course i know i could spend $500 or so extra on my lightforce (3x12v batteries, series up to 36v, Osram 400w globe..) it would certainly outdo the polarion... i think... again, its really hard to tell from pictures of beamshots...

Anyone any ideas?

Regards,

No contest, the SL240 will out throw the PH40 pretty easily, as is the case with any large reflectored 100-130W incan. Funny that you asked since just this past weekend I stuck a 130W H4 bulb in the back of my Blitz 240 just to see what it looked like. Normally it's a 84W HID, the one that BVH built.

The Polarion's reflector is just 3" so it really can't compete in throw alone. Obviously they're two completely different animals and throw is just one specific performance category. If you asked me which light is easier to see with, then definately the PH40 and PH50. I think that's because they illuminate a rather wide angle with about twice the amount of light and at a much better color temperature.

Your SL240 will easily out throw the Polarion PH40. If you really want a super powerful HID and don't mind something bulky, then consider the AmondoTech Titanium Mega Illuminator, formerly known as the Costco/Harbor Freight HID. It is likely to out throw the SL240 Blitz and should put out over 1000 more lumens which will be quite noticeable.

Wow, thanks for the replies guys, i feel as happy as a pig in mud now knowing i have an AU$240 torch that out-throws "the worlds brightest torch".

I dont really have any plans on buying any HID's or anything of that nature, I have my SL240 which far exceeds what it needs to be able to do with it (shine it at rabbits 50m away..).

I think any new torches I buy from now on will be in the form of upgrading my Fenix TK10 with pocketable LED torches that are brighter (though I have ordered a TK40... which is not pocketable..), certainly no plans to buy any form of HID or other spotlight at the moment, especially now i know it wont outdo my SL240 in any way.

The only thing I dont like about the SL240 is I have a big mess of cables and have to lug around a pretty heavy battery for it, but 99% of the time I am using it from a veihicle so thats really a non-issue, an SL240 in the Polarion form factor would be nice, however i just dont think its going to happen for a while.

I could always buy another SL240 and mod it a bit to fix the above problem anyhow.

Wow i can ramble on...

Yeah....the PH40 definitely isn't "the worlds brightest torch" but I agree that if you're just lighting up rabbits at 50 yards from a vehicle it wouldn't make sense to spend $2000 unless you simply felt light doing so. Many conventional, large reflectored spotlights will out throw 3" reflectored HID's. The difference is that the Polarion can fit into a medium sized fanny pack and provide 4000 lumens for over an hour.
