my first mod, always looking for advice

ok so I gutted my 1W 1AA led light I got on ebay for $1

This is what I ordered from DX

I know this is only the start because I also ordered 3 Cree XR-E Q2 Emitter with Star

witch I will use at least one of for a mag mod.

Im not going for broke just looking for better output and good runtime

if and one has any tips or tricks let me know.

I still dont know how I am going to mount the cree in my mag so any tips would be good

I will be posting shots of my shot-y work as soon as I get a chance.

It's going to be difficult to put a Q2 in a MagLite while it's mounted on a star. Here is a typical MagLite heatsink. You cut the cam tube off the back of the plastic reflector so the heatsink will pass through the hole in the center. A star will not fit through the hole.

I understand from your link you got it at a good price. I have seen several posts of people that removed emitters from the star. Do a search for something like, "remove emitter from star". One method I saw that looked easy was to put the star directly on the element of an electric stove. Sorry I didn't bookmark it. Two pairs of needle nosed pliers are needed. One to hold the star onto the burner. And the other to remove the LED once the solder starts to melt. I don't remember if he said what setting he used on the stove. I would imagine low is good enough. If it doesn't melt in say less than 30 seconds, take it off and turn the burner up to medium. Wait a few minutes for it to stabilize and then try again. Another method was to clamp the star in a vise and use a small torch from below on a low setting.

You have three so you can afford to do some experimenting. :naughty:

I ordered the LED on a the board that will fit my light
It was a little tricky to take apart the light without killing it but they are cheap to I figured why not

OK here are the shots of what I am starting with for my AA LED mod

the little steal ring is what holds the circuit boards in place, all you have to do is fiend a way to unscrew is "good luck" and you can pull the head apart.
