Perhaps another option for a pocket WOW light or a weaponlight:

My math on maximum safe discharge of two IMR 16340 li-ion cells
3.7*.55*8*2 = 32.56 watts

What's the wattage of the P91, and am I missing something? What would the runtime look like?

The P91 must be awesome. It draws 2,7 Amps! So far, I've not been able to test it the right way, normal CR123s don't seem to survive this huge load, as there was little difference between the P90 and P91 in my C3. I guess that's because of the batteries, the P91 didn't light up at once, but started dim and then went up in level, indicating the batteries have troubles in feeding it.

I must have some AW 17500s to fully benefit from it I'm afraid.....

This is not exactly what you are talking about, but its a P91 on 2x18650. It is dang bright, and an awesome light. Its on my mythical, non-existent "Powernoodle Top 10" list.

As you have seen mdocod's data, the 300 lumens max on this combination would last only a few minutes....you could actually see it dimming in front of your eyes, no point really.

The P91 should work fine if you use good quality CR123A cells. Where you say it didn't light up at once and then "went up a level", this indicates the cells may have been stored for quite a while, and were showing signs of passivation. After they warm up from this, they should work fine.

Please do NOT use 2x17500 with a P91. This bulb is too much for these cells. The minimum would be 2x18500, or 2x17650. 2x18650 is better.

Same reason you'd use a P61 on a KR2 kit. Occasionally, you just need something small, but *really bright* for a few minutes.

"12P" (FM clone) with 2 18650s - and AW 3 level soft start switch. That's my favorite dog walking light. Has FM reflector & FM1794 bulb. Great stuff.

Can you use the three level switch on normal 2x 18650 Li-Ion's with the 1794? Does it turn on low first and what is it like?......and what would be the run time on low.

That is what I have on the table beside me. FM "12P" with 2 x 18650 AW (not IMR) with the 3 level switch.

Low is slightly yellow, good for general use - reading motor nameplates, picking up dog "stuff". I would off the top of my head say similar to 2D flashlight, maybe slightly less. Not a real low like on a Aeon / Draco / Wee - but a good useful level.

Initially it will start on low. Push / release to go to medium, push / release to go to high, next one takes you back to low. Push & hold to turn off - it will restart at the same level next time. If you turn the tail cap to lock out I believe it will start in low next time.

I use the light (currently) for walking the dogs every night, light is only on sometime, various levels. After 2 weeks I recharge with at least 90 minutes usage, but the batteries are not that low. The run time is pretty good. I'm in a mill this week so using it in industrial setting.

Considering it's in a FM socket (looks to be LOP) and not turbohead this thing can THROW. Sometimes I use my M4 which is bored to take 2 x 18650s, from night to night it is difficult to say which one has more throw.

I run a P91 on a pair of IMR 16340s. I like it, and others I've shown it to have been impressed as well, but the low run time makes it impractical for me. If I could fit a high output LED drop-in in the my particular host, I'd probably shelve the P91.

Powernoodle, I'm guessing your 6P head still has a Lexan lens by the distortion and bubbles in it? Even the P90 in my G2 really needs a Pyrex lens. My P91 is in an M2 (which has Pyrex). My other advice is; if you really love your P91 like I did, don't build a P7 Maglite mod like I did or the P91 won't look the same to you anymore!

@ DM51: Yes, I now know. I asked AW if it's permitted to do so (the maximum load on his protected batteries is 2C, so a 17500 should not be asked more than 2.2 Amps from) and the P91 draws 2.6 amps @ 7.3V....

AWs answer was more than clear: NO, don't do it. He engineered his PCB in such a way, that it won't power up the P91. That's the safest way to make sure people don't try silly things

As there will not fit larger batteries in my C3, I will probably not use the P91 again. And, it must be said: the P90 isn't bad at all :)
and: the LF EO-9 draws 2 Amps and will be brighter than the P90 (which draws about 1.15 Amps).
This one will be within the range.

It sure does, but the chicks dig it that way.

There is plenty of noodlelove to go around. I still like my 12P+P91 even though I have a number of other barnburners (Tiablo ACE, Mac's Customs, etc.). I'm always in search of something bigger and better - just like everyone else.
