I want to buy my friend a flashlight (as a gift for installing my furnace ducting, as it happens!) and I know what type he could use, so I want the best:

1. It must be 1-handed operable (switch on side).
2. Run on CR-123A
3. Max 2 batteries.
4. Must have CRE super new LEDs (or equivalent).

Thanks for any advice! I have the Fenix P1D-CE which would be perfect, but its not one-handed on/off.

Thanks!

Dean

If you take out the CR123A requirement, the Fenix L2DCE would be a great choice. It's like a 2-celled, clickie P1DCE, but with a better UI.

You should be getting him a gold plated light!:sold:

Cheers!

Do they make such a thing? Or are you kidding? They would be easier to find in the dark!

He's kind of hung up on CR123A's now, buys them by the hundred. Uses them for his job when working inside huge boilers.

Achilleus, does the switch have to be on the side, or can it be on the tailcap. Most of the 123 lights have tailcap switches which will limit your choices? What is your price range? I agree with Carrot that the L2DCE is a great choice for a gift light but is not a 123 light nor has a switch on the side.

All I'm saying is get something (Like Fenix, Lumarpower, surefire etc.) that he may want to treasure instead of using them on the job.
If he needs some thing for the job use, get him what he like to use on the job already as a spare.

What do you think?

I would recommend a Steamlight Task-Light 2L3W or a Pelican M3 LED. Both use CR123's and have side switches. The Task-Light has a two stage switch which is very usefull. Neither of them use Cree and I doubt you will find a light that will fullfill all that you are looking for.

Another alternative would be the Fenix L1D CE if you like the Clikie switch,
Side switches only make the light longer

As per your specs, the Lumapower LD-Mini or LP-Mini would suffice. Haven't got one but it comes in many flavors, black, nickle, brass, its small and its got rave reviews here in CPF.

The M1 would likely be my first choice as well.

Might also try to sell him on the idea of LiIon cells. The 18650 gets much longer runtimes than primary CR123As.

Just read a review of the Lumapower M1 and this is really one neat light, I might purchase one and run it with the Pila 600P, amazing runtimes and the light is built like a tank!!
