Hi, flashlight newbie looking for a recommendation. I'm a long-term, ultralight urban traveler: I have a 28L backpack with a laptop and change of clothes and that's about it. I'm stepping up from traveling for a week or two most months to traveling indefinitely and working (I'm a web programmer) as I go and wanted to replace my absolute worst piece of gear.

Previously, I've used a cheapo 3-AAA LED flashlight I got promoting some tech company or another, but it's always frustrated me because it's bulky for how little light it throws and never quite right for any of its jobs. So I was really happy to find this forum full of experts. I've been reading posts for the last few days and decided to fill in the (awesome) checklist to ask for recommendations.

I found some other threads, but wanted to ask again because they're all at least a year old and about hiking/backpacking more than urban travel. For reference, backpacker, quick question, good hiking discussion, small light discussion.

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?
Online.

2) Budget:
I'd like to spend under $75, but I don't know enough to know what's reasonable. Hard maximum is $200, I don't like carrying very expensive things.

3) Format:
I want a flashlight so I can get around in unfamiliar cities and buildings, but I'd also like some provision for hands-free use so I could read books, or pack in the dark - maybe by clipping to my shirt? I have no idea what's available.

Not a headlamp. I meet and travel with folks for work and I'm already pushing the limits of business fashion.

4) Flashlight-specific format/size:
Keychain or EDC small. I'm traveling, so weight is a concern.

5) Emitter/Light source:
LED for size and battery life. I'm not particular about color as long as it's white enough for me to read a page, and I don't need a lot of light.

6) Manufacturer:
Don't mind putting a light together (have a soldering iron and very basic skill) but I'd prefer manufactured.

7) Battery
I'm traveling with Eneloop LSD NiMH for my various gadgets, so taking AA or AAA is a must. I have no room for more formats and when I go too long between recharges I'm able to buy AA/AAA everywhere; coin batteries are often difficult.

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need?
I don't have any familiarity with lumen measurements, so let me describe my three most-common scenarios:

I read in the dark on planes/trains/buses and I'd like to do so comfortably for a few hours at a time but without excessively disturbing other passengers.

I need to un/re-pack in a dark room (hostel or other shared accommodations) and mostly need spot light to make sure nothing's forgotten under the bed and that what I expect to be in a bag is actually in there.

Less frequently than the above two, I'm in an unfamiliar city and need light to walk over broken pavement or otherwise look at nearby (< 10m) things.

9) Throw vs. Flood:
I pretty much answered this above, a few times a week I need a very little light for < 1m to read, every week or two I need 1-3m of looking around, and every 2-5 weeks I need to walk around a bit. So for every use I need flood more than throw.

10) Runtime:
3+ hours for reading, 10-15 minutes for packing, 10-60m for walking. I currently travel with 4 AAs and 4 AAAs and can swap them in as needed, and I don't mind adding 2 more of either to my travel kit if needed for my long-term reading.

11) Durability/Usage:
Very important. Luggage always gets banged around a bit, and it's hard to replace things on the road. I'm willing to pay for quality (though I have no idea, in this context, how much quality costs).

It doesn't need to survive prolonged immersion, but it must be usable in rain and survive, say, getting a glass of water dumped on it.

12) Switch Type and location:
I have no preference. I do not need to signal or blink the light.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection:
I need two, maybe three levels. Maybe this means I need two lights for the two very different uses, I don't know.

14) Material/Finish/Coating
Whatever's light and can deal with, say, getting dropped from a table to a stone floor every once in a while. I've got a pretty strong sense of smell, so it would be nice if it didn't leave my hand smelling of metal (U.S. coins are particularly bad about this).

15) Special Needs/extras:
Maybe a diffuser for the reading use?
Some kind of hands-free clip, strap, etc. I don't know what's available.
Lighter is better, but anything handheld is probably going to be OK.

So, in summary:

Need a hardy little AA/AAA flashlight for reading and occasional urban use, everything else is negotiable.

Also, is there a glossary or intro anywhere? I haven't been able to find one in the sticky threads, and I want to understand terms. As a nerd, it frustrates me to have to tell little stories instead of pick options. :D

i somehow still would like to offer you to look at a "headlamp" anyways. (it can be used as pocket light too with the clip.

zebralight h501w. runs on 1AA. it is great task light and versatility of it is amazing. it is all flood light but gives enough light so you can walk around with it. low is low enough that you can read with it. it comes with headband (handsfree) pocketclip sleeve (use it like i do in my shirt collar, outside of my chestpocket, or clipped into my pocket) it is an angle light (the led is mounted in the side) it can tailstand because it had flat bottom (can lay it on table or something and aim it at what you do..)

i know i am tremendously happy to have mine. cant imagine living without it anymore.

for close up stuff its king. if you need to look further away often (over 20meters/yards

then their other model might be the one for you the h51.

ofcourse you could also just a get an normal flashlight (like 4sevens quark AA) that offers you really low output (reading a map in darkness or reading) and high output for normal use. (and sos etc blinker modes if you need to alert someone) and then add an elastic headband so you can have an handsfree light too if needed.

just to give you more reason to buy the h501w (the neutral tint is more pleasing to my eyes and seems to give out little better color rendition)

runtimes: high: over 2 hours, medium: over 15hours and low: about 3 days. (and there is really low output too that lasts almost 3 weeks non stop. (so i would guess you wouldnt have to add any more AA batteries to your normal setup.)

Aeon with a neck lanyard. 40 hours on low. The extra battery is tiny!

Welcome to CPF!

+1 on the Quark and the clip would allow for use as reading light.

Also the Fenix LD10 or LD15, both are single AA powered, the LD10 is 3 mode, the ld15 two mode, good quality in your price range.

and the Sunway L10A, also single AA, 3 modes, and angle head, been getting ++ from CPF members.

Wow, I really appreciate all the suggestions.

Aeon doesn't use AA/AAA so I have to pass, cute as it is.

The Sunway L10A and Zebralight h501w lights are interesting, I had no idea there were angled flashlights. Sounds like my options are those two and the 4Sevens Quark AA or Preon 1, Fenix LD01, LD10, or LD15.

They're all close in price. I don't know how to decide between them, really. The angled lights look perfect for reading, the Fenix lights have a diffuser available, and they all can stand on end for lighting a room. Hm.

Maybe go with a Fenix so I can use the diffuser for reading/packing and without for walking?

I'd go for the Quark AA, myself. There's not much out there as good as the Quark for a handheld in the AA form factor.

I agree, the quark aa is the way to go. 130 lumens on high.
And moonlight mode for really long run time. And reading up close

NonSenCe,

+1 on the H501. It's #3 on the "must have flashlights" thread.

One of the OP's requirements is 3 hours of reading. The all flood beam and hand-free use of the H501 is ideal for that. I would also suggest the new H51. It's tiny, floody enough to read, hand-free, has as much throw as many flashlights, and a record-setting brightness for an AA light. Check out the beam shots in this thread:

I'd go with something 1xAA. Most popular battery type, small, adjustable, etc. Get something like a Quark.

Quark AA Neutral... or the ZL 501W with the pocket clip-clips to shirt collar nicely for reading.

also, a Fenix E01 for backup... or any other good reputation AAA keychain light.

While reading your requirements there was one particular flashlight that was screaming out to me. As mentioned by others posters, either the zebralight h501w or the H51, both of which run on 1xAA battery, seem to be the perfect fit for this situation. The H501w is less bright than the H50 but it is geared towards flood. You can attach a pocket clip to it when you want to be socially acceptable and when there is nobody looking, you can easily slide it into the small and light headband attachment and use it as a headlamp.

This light has gotten great reviews on CPF and I really can't think of another one that would fit your situation better. Good luck finding what you're looking for, and welcome to CPF.

Another vote for the Fenix LD10! Nearly perfect.

Small light for reading - maybe one of the Fenix AAA's that's comfortable to clip to a hat or headband. You could then go with the Fenix LD20 as your larger light (2AA vs 1AA for LD10). Ultimately a personal preference.

The small AAA Fenix can live on your keyring permanently, taking up next to no space.

abandle,

Here is my ultralight setup. I recommend what I actually use everyday.

The backup Maratac AAA is in the wallet. The Zebralight H501 is in a small phone case. Also, check out the Zebralight Mods thread in my signature to see what you can do with this amazing light.

My H501 is used for reading. Worn around the neck, it's very discreet and convenient. When you are done, just tuck it behind your shirt.

The zebralight H501w is absolutely great, you don't have to use it as a headlamp, but for situations where it doesn't matter if you look dorky (reading on a plane, camping etc) the hands free use is invaluable. I often clip my H501w to my belt, which gives nice task lighting, and is discreet when switched off.

Another recommendation would be the 4Sevens Preon 2. It looks and feels just like a pen in your shirt pocket, so you don't get any weird looks, it's small enough to hold in your mouth if you have to, and is very floody for reading and close-up lighting. I've dropped mine in a bucket of muddy water before, so it passes the water-proofing test!

Hope this helps,
Alex

Maybe go with a Fenix so I can use the diffuser for reading/packing and without for walking?

I have a Fenix LD10 R4 and various diffusers / accessories. The wand style diffuser isn't very good for reading unless you hold it in such a way that the light doesn't also hit you in the eyes. The light-end style diffuser would be your best bet for reading, the wand style is great for area lighting, inside a tend, at a picnic table making dinner in the dark, and so on. Sometimes dealers offer a bundle of accessories in with the light. I personally like this light very much - it is well built, has fantastic output and runtime on eneloops *and* also pretty decent runtime even on alkaline cells (which is somewhat unusual).

One feature the Quark has over the LD10 is a lower low which might be of interest. That said I use the low level output of the LD10 to read at night in various places -- in the car, waiting for someone, at the park waiting for my kids soccer practice to conclude, and in bed (my wife tells me the output doesn't disturb her at all).

Of course a headlamp is also useful for many of the tasks you've listed but personally I would not pick a floody headlamp if you can only have one light.

Myself if I am limited in the lights I've got with me I'm always going to prefer something other than a pure flood light, because a floody light is always a floody light. Instead I'm attracted to carrying a light which is a combo of some flood and throw because you can always turn such a light into nothing but flood with a diffuser or even a piece of scotch tape in a pinch, and you've still got a light with some throw for when you need it.

Any of the lights discussed will more than meet your runtime and output requirements so I would look for form factor, appeal, and other features (like angle light or not, head lamp or not) and pick. Chances are you'll be delighted no matter what.

You might even find that a tiny AAA format light amply meets your needs.

The Sunway L10A and Zebralight h501w lights are interesting, I had no idea there were angled flashlights. Sounds like my options are those two and the 4Sevens Quark AA or Preon 1, Fenix LD01, LD10, or LD15.

While I conditionally agree with recommending Zebralight H501 I'd like to suggest you took a look at Fenix MC10 too. Specwise it should be able to provide for all your needs.

The 'conditionally' part comes from my own experiences with Zebralight H30. For reading and close range tasks floody Zebralights are brilliant but their strength becomes a weakness when you try to use them to light up a street beyond a couple yards. Urban light pollution washes away the non-concentrated light sometimes totally.
