Seoul P4 Question (Surefire E1L)

Hi,

I've tried searching for an answer, but no luck so far. My question is, I am planning on purchasing a Surefire E1L (1st gen) and planning on replacing the LED with a Seoul P4 LED that I purchased.

1. Will the Surefire E1L (1st gen) work with Seoul P4?
2. Does Surefire head unscrew? (to modify the LED)
3. What other flashlight would you recommend to upgrade to a Seoul P4?
4. What's the difference between the 1st and 2nd gen of Surefire E1L? (which one do you recommend?)

Thanks in advance.

Well, I can help you with question #3.

The Surefire 6PL and G2L already come with a Seoul P4.
No need to upgrade those two models.

The KL1 head is nice with a Seoul and an Mcr20s reflector. It is a WAY more usable beam and a lot more output!

Probably the best simple upgrades for the KL1 head IMO.

When you say KL1 head, is that the one with E1L?

Thanks for all the help!

Does the Mcr20 fit in this KL1:

This Kl1 is great with a Seoul btw.

Most Surefires are hard to open because of liberal use of locktite:(

I have one of the 1st Gen. Ribbed style and the 2nd Gen. that came on the E1L and E2L.

I was refering to the 2nd Gen for modding, but either one is a good host for a Seoul mod.

The ribbed style looks great

As for opening...a lot of heat is useful to help in loosening up the loctite.

How much heat is needed? a torch? hair dryer? hot water?

Thanks.

Used a heat gun for a while but not use an acetelyne torch.....quicker

I've heard of people putting the bezels in an airtight bag and boiling them, hair dryer, and even putting it in the oven.

just be careful

Milkyspit is the king of L1 modders. I would give him a PM or an email if you have any questions.

*doh....u said E1L not L1 my bad but Milky can prolly still help you.

Milkyspit has done quite a few mods with the Surefire E1s and E1Ls. Heck, he can probably fit 3 Rebel 100s in there if you really want him to.

I don't know much about modding the E1L so this is just from what I've read(some have already been answered above).

1. It should work, when you have the LED at the right focusing point.
2. Yes, but it is glued together, look above for opening suggestions.
3. Any Luxeon light you have. At least double the output for the same runtime.
4. Reviews of the 1st gen KL1 and 2nd gen KL1. From that, I'd prefer the 2nd gen. But overall, either a modded head(to what I need) or the KX1(Cree XR-E LED module used in the current E1L).

:welcome:

I have both styles, but only the 1. gen has a Seoul in it. The 2. gen is only partially opened (boiling/freezing) since I had a (unrelated) hand injury a before getting the light opened.
Plan on keeping the optic in the 2. gen and using it with a 2 cell body since the 1. gen is smaller, and better looking, and gets the single cell body.

Would a McR20 fit in the 1. gen? Nice beam?
I have an IMS 17 in it which gives a very L4 like beam.

Thanks for the great info guys:rock:

Yes, you can open it with heat. I use a heat gun if I can get one, but usually open by boiling in a bag then using strap wrenches. I typically use a IMS17 or Kharod 17 reflector in the first gen KL1. The pad the emitter sits on will pull up to make it easier to solder the new emitter onto. I'd affix it with AA epoxy before soldering. Makes a very nice little light once the seoul is in it.
