Some might say that the Spy lights are not about beam shots - but that would be a difficult argument because the beams from the Spys in all iterations is so fantastic.

This thread is to capture what is already scattered about all over the forum in one place - your Spy 005, 007 and Tri-V Beam Shots!! I'll start the ball rolling in the next post...

:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

Here's the first in what I hope to be a long series of beam shot posts...

This is the play area in a common area in my neighborhood. Didn't manage to shoot it from the same angle as the beam shots - I'll try to do that later today and edit the post.

Camera is a Canon EOS 40D - Lens is a Sigma 18-50 2.8. Camera is set to 20 second exposure, f/22 (to get depth of field), and 1000 ISO.

'Target' is about 80 feet away. Did my best to set up the ultimate exposure to replicate what you see with the naked eye. I came close, but perhaps not as bright in the photos as what you would see. When you considered the distance, etc., you understand why the flood and low reflector settings don't show a lot of light, but the area around the camera was well lit! So here we go.

I love this configuration - but it does get warm rather quickly!

I goofed and moved the light - but the effect is kinda cool...:p

For reference - one of my old favorites (old?), the Haiku XPG
IMG_1096.JPG

By now my Tri-V was warm - it had cooled down a bit, but was still warm. Was it giving full output? Dunno - but it was/is plenty for me!

Hope to (soon) add some flood specific photos - it does a great job as a lighting source for photos. But for now, carrying the Tri-V is truly like carrying 3 amazing lights in one!

Thanks, Data!!

Great pics! Thanks for all the work Dan! I'll come and be the tripod for the next round of beam shots. :grin2:

:green::eek:oo::rolleyes::twothumbs. Great work Dan! Enjoy the mixing up of control shot settings. I think this selection suited the bill perfectly as the flood was noted by the upclose lawn and tree branches hanging in the viewing window. The sandbox along with the slide-plaything dsplayed the reflector while the intensity of light on the slide and fences behind it gave a perfect indication of the aspheric.

Interesting to note how the Haiku XP-G outshone everything but the Elindil, Mac's custom, the Tri-V on aspheric, and 007 on high setting.

The intensity is amazing on the Aspheric as the wall on the house behind the play area is fully spotlighted. Would love to see this at half or full mile range if that kind of shot is at all even possible to capture with a camera.

How does the throw of the big A on the Tri-V compare with those of the Jetbeam M1X and the late Creemator?

How does the throw of the big A on the Tri-V compare with those of the Jetbeam M1X and the late Creemator?

:D thanks, Ryan. It actually out throws the Jetbeam...so of course, the Creemator, too. The trade off is no spill, but with a floodlight and reflector a switch away, that's no worry! It's an amazing light...

You'd think I don't do anything else.... but I've been so fascinated with the Tri-V. Maybe after this I'll just use it....;)

These are "white wall" shots. I was shining the aspheric against the wall earlier and noticed that at certain distances, you can see the lines in the dies. It prompted me to try and capture this in photos.

All of the photos are labeled, but what isn't labeled is that the lights are about 30 inches from the door.

Without further adieu....

Thanks for the indoor shots, Dan, and the #'s for reference... The high output outdoor ones are amazing, I'll have to wait for my IMR's to crank it up. And to think, the stock 1000ma levels I've been playing with make me smile...:) I appreciate the time you take to post these, the effort is much appreciated.

I've been having great fun with the projector on my Tri-V -- it's my first projector flashlight -- but I gotta say, what's really remarkable is how far the reflector can throw. Obviously the projector is going to win any shootout, but the reflector holds its own against even the brightest of my other lights, and I'd feel comfortable saying the reflector can basically be thought of as a long-distance floodlight. Anything that I've aimed the projector at and been easily able to distinguish what the target was, has also been illuminated by the reflector at least enough that I could still see the target.

I agree with fyrstormer. This morning I took my dogs for the 'signature early morning walk' and kept the Tri-V on medium reflector most of the time, default programming. Such a tiny reflector, yet it puts out such a nice, even flood of light with decent throw.

A quick click to high lights up even more - but to scan the treeline at the edge of the soccer field I walk by, the aspheric is just amazing.

For near field lighting, the flood is great. One of my dogs (a 15 pound Sheltie) is getting on in years at 13 1/2, and she has difficulty seeing curbs in the dark. I flip the light to the #5 slot, the high MCE, and it is like the sun is shining in our immediate area.

What a great light.

I am particularly happy with these beam shots! And OH, so happy with the Tri-V. The following is taken from a more comprehensive post you can find HERE.

The pile of straw is about 75 feet from the camera. I am at a 35mm equivalent of about 60mm. This photo was shot as the sun was sinking with a slow shutter, high ISO and open aperture. That pile of debris just off to the left of the second tree from the right is my target.

Camera is a Canon EOS 40D with a Sigma 18-50 2.8 lens. Lens is zoomed to 37mm (60 mm equivalent on a 35mm film camera). ISO1000, shutter 1 full second, aperture at 6.3. All of the photos can be seen at higher resolution HERE.

Here is an amazing custom light, a real powerhouse Milky creation, the Elendil. I love this light! A smooth SST-50 at 5700k. Makes a great comparison..

Now look at the Tri-V reflector at 1000mA

How 'bout the spotlight...

SWEET!

So I had a few requests - different levels, longer distances, etc. I changed the angle and spaced it out to around 100-125 feet. Same camera - Canon 40D with Sigma 18-50 2.8, 2.5 second shutter, f/8.0, ISO 800, focal length 34 mm. Hopefully these shots will give you a bit more of an idea of how awesome each of these lights are!

As usual, here's a link to higher resolution versions of the photos.

Thank you Launch Mini! Photos don't need to be complicated to be useful - those provide a great illustration of the differences between your two 007s.

If you've not done beam shots before, give it a try! I know there are talented photographers out there...let's see your shots!

Interesting comparison (to me anyways) of my M6 MN-20 running on 2x18650 vs. the Tri-V spot @ 1800mA. For further comparison, the windowsill at far right has mid-day overcast light on it.

I love the warm beam of that 007 Launch Mini!

Wish I could play in this thread! I calculated that I would have to sell about a 1/3rd of my collection for an 005, 1/2 for an 007, and all of it for a Tri-V. :p :grin2:
