I have been doing alot of reading on here the past couple of days.

Need a spot light for checking around the farm at night. Used alot in the winter months checking cattle. Will be used on the ATV, on foot, and from a vehicle.

I have been reading alot about getting the Sams HID on the auction site.
What are the plus and minuses of HID? Do they hold up well for getting jossled around on the ATV? Fire up and work properly in very cold conditions, ect...

How large physically are these lights and how heavy are they? I find lots of pics but none in a persons hand for any refference.

Are there any other lights I should consider?

Thanks from a NEWB !

Plus: very bright, can throw VERY far if right reflector is used, Nice white light.

Cons: Start up time, some can take up to 30 seconds to get to full brightness, bulbs could be expensive

As long as you don't drop them hard, they should take the bumping of an atv.

I can't recommend lights since I don;t have a HID myself, but I heard the Sams club HID is a great starter.

Opps forgot:

Welcome to CPF! Enjoy your time here.

Welcome, andyr354. In the major threads on CPF that cover in detail the available lights, there are some pictures to help give you size perspective.

As far as ruggedness, they are not in the same league with LED's, but they are not delicate either. One company supplies HID's as aircraft landing lights, which take plenty of shocks. Both of mine came in well made padded carrying cases, which is how I suggest they be transported from place to place.

Return to this issue after reading the long and detailed threads about the ACRO, Polarion, XeVision, AE and other serious HID makers. By then you will know how much you want to spend and the results of the shoot outs.

BTW, now that you have found CPF, your life will never be the same.

I bought a Sam's HID at my club a few weeks back for $50. They are now down to $45. It's a very big bang for the buck. However, they are quite large. It does have a strap and you'll find yourself needing it it during longer carries. With the latern grip I couldn't imagine it being practical to use from the seat of my truck.
