Are there any AA lights out there with the quality and durability of a surefire? Similar size, finish, form factor. Could be incan or LED. Basically I want a surefire that takes AAs.

Greetings!

I like my Fenix lights too... but they're no Surefire.

The closest to Surefire in terms of rugged, no-nonsense packaging and solid reliability I've found so far (but in AA) are River Rock and Inova. Unfortunately, most of Inovas offerings are CR123, not AA... and the River Rock offerings all have the "moon beam" with almost no spill.

This leaves the Fenix lights. As most other replies on this thread have indicated, they're probably the most "Surefire-Like" full-featured AA lights out at the moment, barring custom lights.

Best wishes,
Bawko

Peak LED Solutions has them
Take a Mediterranean CR123A light and get the optional 2AA body for it with either the twisty, momentary or clickie switch to turn it on or off. Take your pick from HA-III aluminum, brass or stainless steel to match your needs. I use the older Luxeon versions in stainless and HA-III aluminum as work lights and they are very durable, take a pounding and are water/chemical proof.
The newer versions use Seoul Semiconductor P4 U LEDs so they are very bright.

Fenixes are surely good but IMHO in the AA form factor only Lumapowers go near Surefire's quality and finish.

Inova Bolt 2AA, Victorinox 2aa (made by Inova, but smaller than the Bolt), Peak, TnC, Heliotek, and Electro Lumens are all high quality and tough lights. Link to TnC here. Heliotek makes one light, a very tough 2AA light that requires 1.7V Lithium primaries though. See the favorable FLR Review.

Does Peak still sell accessories? Their new website doesn't list 2AA tubes, switches, or any other of the extras that used to be available for their lights.

It appears you have to call them for any accessories. It don't say that anywhere but for some posters here on CPF. I don't know why.

Peak really needs to find sombody new and redo the web site. The old one was much better.

I can't agree with the Vic being a good alternative.... But more on a basis of overall quality. I bought two of the 2AA models. The first one, the threads were bone dry! Since you have to twist the heads to turn them on, that's a huge problem. The batteries were already inside the light when I took it out of the blister pack. I turn the head slowly, the light not only didn't turn on; but the head got stuck! .... And stayed that way. I don't usually toss a light into the garbage can, but I did with this one!

Still, I liked the design, and figured I had gotten a rare lemon that squeezed by Q.C.

When I bought another one, I turned the head very slowly. When I first felt it get stuck, I gently backed-off a bit and turned the head even slower. I got it off. Dumped out the batteries that came with it, replaced them with fresh cells, and realized that the threads were cutting slivers off of the O-ring! :shakehead

The 2nd light was almost bone dry too. I literally went around the corner to a drug store, bought a small tub of Vasoline, and ended up applying what can best be described as an obscene amount of lube to the threads. The light works well now, but I have very little confidence in it. Clearly, the first one wasn't a rare lemon. :thumbsdow

Get the Lumapower M3 Transformer. It comes with the single AA and double AA bodies. www.lumapower.com It's a little lower in quality and fit/finish than a Surefire, but I like mine.

I'd say Peak is probably the closest you'll get to an AA Surefire-quality light.

But for high output if you don't mind a bit of a drop in quality... well, Fenix makes excellent lights.

Some have suggested Fenix AA lights. Fenix offers decent "bang for the buck." But, in NO WAY does Fenix offer fit and finish or quality control similar to Surefire.

Inova 2AA Bolt offers both "bang for the buck" and high quality fit and finish.

Peak AA lights offer high quality fit and finish at somewhat higher prices.

There may be other manufacturers that should be included in this list, but Fenix is not among them.

Hello,
I would say: the Inova Bolt or the Peaks.
I just ordered the AAA bolt and the AA bolt, so I can't comment on them yet. But others seem to be impressed.
(we need Flashlightreviews to start again!!!:mecry:)

Peak should be as good as Surefire (also at the same price, or higher) and waterproof/dunkable/diveable.
Any CR123 Peak can be fitted with their optional 2AA tube. Mind you: in this configuration, the light will be longer than a 2AA minimag.
Other, non CR123, AA Peaks: Pacific, Kino Bay

Kind regards,
Joris
