Hi all,

I have a couple of surefire lights I would like to hack, but first I need to know a little more about them.

The frist is an L2 digital lumamax. The second is a U2 ultra.

What I would like to know is what causes the L2 to have 2 levels of brightness? Is it the little plug inside the body, is it the driver, the tailcap?

Same question with the U2. When I twist the neck is the brightness lowered by resistance or does this have to do with the driver?

I have hacked the heads of KL1 and KL4s, but if anyone has threading/pics available for a U2 or L2 mod that would be great.

L2 has a pill in the body that's the driver, the modes are a resistor in the tail giving you a low.

The U2's ring has magnets in it and I'm not 100% sure about the rest, hall sensor something?

Ok so rather than having the driver in the head (like in a KL4 head) the driver is in the body? Does that mean the led in the head is DD?

Are there clikcky tailcaps that fit the L2?

Yes the driver is in the body making the head essentialy dumb, or DD.

Nope no clicky for the L2. You can run the head on another body like an E2L or something but I don't recall that heads true/safe voltage range. Of course you'd only have one mode.

I remember someone knocking the pill out of the body and boring it for 2 17500 cells once but I'm sketchy on the details. He might of had to use a short spacer and I do not know if he was using the stock L2 head.
Probably not but it's been a long time ago and I can't remember.

Hmmm.. eager to get this head apart now. I am not sure if having the driver in the body is going to be a good thing or not, time will tell.

In the heads I have modded so far the KL4, and the KL1 with aspherical have proven to have the best heatsinking (the old KL1s were not so great). I am hoping this light will be able to handle an SST. I would like to do it with the body pill in tact, but it may not be an option. The bore on this light is the smallest I have encountered, it wont even fit a 17mm cell, so something may have to be done about that. The extra run time from 2x17500 cells doesn't sound bad either though.:D
