Has anyone taken apart their X200 weaponlight and modified it with a Seoul and reflector?

Any pics of this taken apart?

I just got an X200A and the sqaure/diamond shaped beam is a little....uh...well..strange! I compared it to my E2L and the X200A definetely has a more focused narrow beam. I'm trying to get some options, should I decide that I don't like it.

So far this is a really cool little light! It is the exact same lenght as an E1e. I just don't know if I'm really gonna like the TIRs beam profile.

Any help would be great!

The X200 is a cool light. I did some mods to a few a couple years back. No idea if the X200 is now sealed with the liquid weld stuff that SF had switched to. It's easy to screw up the light engine in there if you aren't careful. Good luck! :D

Re: Surefire X200 Mod---DONE!

Alright, I got my new X200A in the mail today. It is my second one. I didn't care for the beam on the second one and decided I would attempt what could end up making my good day a horrible one. I noticed a rubber seal around the bezel. My first one had noticable thread locker oozing out between the neck and bezel. I have been warned that this was not an easy head to open. After playing with it for a few hours, I decided to post a WTT (want to trade) in the Marketplace. Well I figured I'd try to open the new one with the rubber seal. I put it in the vise and heated the head a bit with a torch then used some vise grips with a rubber bike tire tube wrapped around the head....it came right off! AND it still worked!.
YEAH!! WOOOHOO!!! I wanted an X200B but the shorter runtime made it a little undesirable. (not that I wouldn't pick one up if the price was right) I would still like to replace the emitter with a Seoul, but I cant get those TINY stainless allen head screws out of the aluminum emitter hold down. I first tried an McR20 and the beam had a bad donut hole, next I decided to take the McR20s out of my KL1 and replace the optic with it. Perfect....Almost. Id like a little bit more definded "hot spot", but the spill is pretty nice! Now if only I can get the Stainless screws out, I'll replace the emitter with a brand spankin new in package Seoul!

If I get the emitter swapped I'll update the thread.

Just wanted to share.

Re: Surefire X200 Mod---DONE!

I DID IT!! I used a hot soldering iron to heat the screws and loosen the threadlock, then used a small torx to unscrew. I desoldered the LUX 3 and pulled it. I replaced it with a Seoul USXOH . It's easily 2-3 times as bright! at least it seems! I am SO damn happy how this mod turned out. No more need for the X200B! It has a such a nice beam profile!

HERE IT IS!

Thanks,
Strangely the beam was very blue at first...now with more use it has become very nice and white !
It throws farther than my stock X200A and has a ton of spill, ALMOST identical to the the L4 but better, and easily as bright if not brighter!

It was very easy! Just be very careful removing the head/bezel. If the Neck---(not bezel) comes loose I think it may sheer the wires off.
Make sure JUST THE BEZEL COMES OFF!
Good luck!

That mod sounds good, isn't the X200A basically a KL1 on the body.

I am so glad I don't need the X200B now....I have the same or better brightness, more throw, great spill and increased runtime!
This is definetly a mod I am completely happy with!
No it is not.
The TIR optic is different than the KL1.
I'll post pics in a bit to show the difference.

I'll also post some more beamshots in the days to come.

Fantastic work! I am envious:thumbsup:

I am still very happy with the performance of my X200B, but I am tempted to send mine to Milky to have him do a similar mod to it during my next vacation. (Cant be without my X200B at work!!!)

Nick,

I'm trying to talk a mutual friend into offering an upgrade to the SF weaponlights. My thinking is that with the advent of the X300, all those $200+ X200 series are now, if not obsolete, then starting to get outdated. Perhaps by ugrading the emitter, they can continue to be relevant. My question is, will LEOs fork over the $$ for the mod or take the hit and upgrade to an X300? Would you trust a modded SF on the street?

Good point, but If done by someone with the credentials & experience of MilkySpit I would have no concerns with trusting it on the street.

I would like to see a side by side comparison of a X300 and a X200 modded by Milky with a Seoul emitter before I spend my money to see the potential benefit of the mod instead of just going with the X300

DaFabricata,

Very Nicely done Mate!!

Makes me wanna try it now!

Would the SSC fit with the Optic still installed?

Also just to make sure I have this right, You only replaced the LED and removed the optic?

TIA

Boltgun,
Yes I only replaced the LED, removed the optic and replaced it with an Mcr20s reflector.
I tried the optic with the Seoul and it would not focus properly. There were a ton of weird artifacts and no concentrated beam profile.
That emitter "hold down plate" was not reinstalled due to the reflector, but the reflector base actually acts as the "hold down" making contact with the base of the LED, and will help prevent the emitter from coming loose. I used Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive on the backside if the emitter to help with thermal transfer and to adhere the two together. With the Seoul in place and the Bezel screwed down, the reflector actually fits perfectly between the lense & LED base.

Hi there, new to CPF.
Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead. I have looked everywhere for an x200 mod that is least intrusive and also one that possibly does not require a custom adapter, want to buy comment deleted. I especially dig the C head adapters I've seen, it really opens up a whole new world for these lights.

My question: Is there any way this mod can be done by anyone other than myself?

superjoenutz, repost your post as a new thread. Not really appropriate to bump this thread for your question, and post count. Closing this thread.
