I NEED to get some new indexable inserts for my tools on my lathe. I found what looks like to be a killer deal (1/2 the cost of the uncoated inserts) on the ones I need except for the fact that they are TiN coated. I know that with Alu you are supposed to use uncoated carbide as the TiN coating causes the chips to stick to the bit and load up. My question is, how bad is this really and will it be OK for a garage hack such as myself? Will there be any problems with surface finish?

I doubt you would notice any difference at all! I never have, and normally one pays a premium for TiN coating. As to BUE, (Built-up-edge) I've read the opposite due to TiN's "slipperiness." With short run stuff, coolant makes a huge difference, but If you're a home hobbyist like me, flood coolant is a PITA!
