Today's state of the art?

Hi,

I'm out of the flash light business since a few years.
Before that time I bought a Surefire L4 and a Surefire E1e moded with a KL4 LED Head and the L4 tailcap switch.

I'm now looking for a new LED flash light for the son of my girl-friend. He's 15 years old. Here in Germany I can get some Fenix lights easy (L1T, L1D, L2D).

What would you recommend to choose for him if I'd search a similar LED light as my Surefires maybe with AA batteries instead of CR123? Are the Fenix lights ok? Or should I choose something else?

Please forgive me if I'm not using the search function.

The Fenix lights are good lights. Much much better then the cheap chinese lights from some other companies. They use O rings and even include extra O rings. Fit and finish are very good. Surefire is a step up in quality though. Surefire is a step or two high in price too.

Well, you didn't say what your son likes. You did state "state of the art". So I would recommend the Fenix L2D with Rebel 100 in it. It is 2AA, is about the brightest you can get right now with two regular AAs, and has great run times considering the brightness.

The only down sides to the Fenix L2D rebel 100 are the low mode may still be too bright for some situations, and when turning on in low mode there is a brief flash of high mode. Oh, and some don't like the SOS and Strobe modes, but I have no problems with them.

In fact when they come back in stock I will buy another one for my non-flashaholic dad as a gift.

I can't imagine he wouldn't be impressed with a Fenix. I have several and like them quite a bit. A Fenix is heck of a great light for the money.

I agree with PocketBeam. The L2D Rebel would be a great choice. It takes readily available AAs, is crazy bright, the Rebel tints tend to run warmer (more natural)... lots of positives there.

And if a Rebel model isn't available, the Cree L2D is certainly no pushover.

If he wants a single cell AA light the new L1T (V 2.0) has a Rebel. Typical Rebel stats, etc., etc., plus a tactical clickie. Dunno if that's available locally in Germany, though.

These Rebel-based lights would be "state of the art", I would assume. (At least until the Cree Q5s start coming out en masse. Heh.)

I think the Fenix should be fine for your application. The Rebel 100 lights are the brighter ones right now, excluding Cree Q5 mods. You can buy from Fenix store, who include shipping in the price and also have a 8% off coupon for CPF users, the coupon is "CPF8".

Edit: yay, 1000th post!
