Voltage follower on a mag85/mag138

After building an unregulated mag85 for my first light I've decided I want to try something fancier. My mag already fits 4AAs very tightly, so I figure if I sand out the inside a bit I can fit in 12AA without much difficulty.

With 12AA it seems I will need some sort of regulation, so I put together a simple voltage follower to regulate down the voltage. Voltage is set with a pot and a voltage regulator and then amplified with a transistor to provide enough current. I also added a cap for a ghetto soft start.

Before I commit to boring my mag and to anchoring the transistor to the mag body as a heatsink I wanted a little input. Is a voltage follower for some reason a terrible idea? Will this be monstrously inefficient?

I'm still a newbie, thanks for any help.

Welcome to CPF. Type stepdown regulator in Google Search-CPF Only at top of each page. You will get some results.
