The brightest currently available mass-produced 1xAA NiMH is the EagleTac P10A. Second place by an imperceptible margin are both the Nitecore D10 (Q5) and Nitecore DI (Q5). (Stay tuned as the almost-arrived R2 versions of the Nitecores may win out..)
(The brightest all-time mass-produced 1xAA NiMH is still the discontinued JetBeam Jet I Mk IBS.)

Comparing my Nitecore Q5s and R2s, the R2s are noticeably brighter albeit not as smooth beam as Q5s.
According to users in this thread, Liteflux LF2X is brighter than LD01.

Ah, that is helpful, and Mev has the numbers to boil it down too, so I'll append:
The brightest currently available mass-produced 1xAAA NiMH is the LiteFlux LF2X.
The brightest currently available mass-produced 1xAAA Li-Ion/10440 is the Fenix LD01.
Hard to say cos I don't own a P10A. :sigh:
Not sure if this counts for anything, I've compared beam shots of both EX10 R2 (AW RCR123) and NDI R2 (AW 14500) and was pretty surprised they are visibly comparable, EX10 just a tiny tad whiter.

The brightest light, running within specifications, on LiIon is the LF2X, the LD01 is not designed to run on LiIon.

+1, it can be very dangerous to run the LD01 on LiIon because it has not a protection circuit to prevent the battery from overdischarging.. am i right?

That is one problem, but it can be handled. The real problem is the circuit, it is not designed for the current LiIon is driving it at, and it does not have any way to limit the current going into the led. As long as the Vf, of the led, is high enough, it will work, if you get a LD01 with a very low Vf on the led, you will blow either the circuit or the led or even both.
And if the circuit short-circuit, you also have a problem with the battery (But I have never heard about that).

If you are looking for 1 AA and don't mind a mod, a good 1 AA battery with the RV7 or similar driver can hit over 140 lumen out the front.
For something stock, the Nitecore D10 R2 bin is probably one of the better choices.
As for 1 AAA, the Liteflux LF2X is a good choice.
