This is a brilliant question! It's really got me thinking. Here are some things which surprise me, or I at least find curious:
It surprises me that some people don't have any tools around their home. So they can't even change a plug if a fuse blows - they need to ask for help, or even call someone out and pay them to deal with simple issues like that. Or spend hours raking around the cutlery drawer looking for a knife that doubles as a screwdriver!
Good manners and humility are sometimes shockingly absent, too. This can stand out like a sore thumb on CPF for example, where people are usually so well-mannered.
On a CPF-related theme, it has quite often surprised me on CPF how so many people don't seem to have headlamps, and won't even consider them, probably because they seem "dorky" to some. I am the other way around - brought up with headlamps (for backpacking), and only recently finding some value in handheld lamps. I think Doug at FlashlightReviews said it all when he realised how invaluable headlamps were during a blackout.
Finally, as an outdoor enthusiast, I have to say it never ceases to amaze me that some people will contemplate heading into the hills without a bar of Kendal Mint Cake firmly in their top pocket. I mean, really! What are they thinking?
