Whats the deal? Slow Cable service?

I have been experiencing slow cable service for the past two weeks. around 250-300kps, when I use to get 1.3mps. I switched to a new SB5100 cable modem, but it was slow before that. I also purchased a new router. Would the router be restricting my speed? I have tried a TCPOptimizer but there was no change. Any ideas?

Hi V8,

Cable service uses shared bandwidth...the more subscribers on your "hub" the slower the speed. It also may be affected with peak usage hours. I've noticed a broad range of speed at different times but generally hit in about 1mps. Sometimes faster...and sometimes slower.

The very next day after I got Earthlink cable it slowed to a crawl the entire day. The day after it was speedy again, so the problem was external to my set up. Now it's fine, though there is some slowdown at peak times.

Definitely call your provider
