hello people can you advise/help me with my choice of drop in.....i'm going to use a 2d mag so i was thinking about useing 2x18650 (3.7v) to power a malkoff 260lm.....if i got the 4,5,6 D drop in would this be better than useing say 3xC cell batteries and the 2-3D cell drop in.....hope i made sense lol....other than that i might get the terralux 300m and use 2x18650's..cheers Pete

i have tle300, i like it, great drop in, it impresses all my non flashagolic friends, even used to impress me, untill i finished 3xp7 mag.
at first i used it in 4d mag running regular alkalines d cells, it worked fine.
than i desided to use my 4d mag for other project, so i bought 2d mag, bought 6aa adapter from FM, put tle300 into 2d mag loaded the adapter\holder with aa lithiums, i noticed that output of tle 300 increased since i switched to lithiums, i guess alkalines can't provide enough amps for tle to work at full force. you could also use rechargables aa's like eneloops too, 7.2 v is enough for tle to work.
as for malkoff drop ins, those are great, too bad they are all sold out.

at least i'm getting 1 reply.....lol.......18650's just cos i have them and charger....lol
18650's will work just fine, you could fit 2 in your 2d mag. since you already have them that it is definitely the best solution in your case.
there are many threads on battery\lights combo, just use search button, i doubt cpf has dislike for newbys, may be for ppl that are too lazy to do simple research on their own, before asking something that was discussed hundreds of times.

I don't know anything about the TerraLux, so I'll restrict my comments to the Malkoff...

In terms of stored energy, 2x18650 vs 3xC is more or less a push. It appears that both 2-3 cell and 4-5-6 cell drop-ins put out the same 260 lumens, regardless of the number of cells, so it probably comes down to which cell type you prefer.

It looks like Gene updated the driver on the 2-3 cell. The old model would drive the emitter harder on 3 cells than on 2, so it was a great option for a 2D mag - run it on 3xC for brighter output with shorter run time, or 2xD for lower output but much longer run time. A few other makers/modders have done similar Mag builds and I really like that set-up.

You probably still get a little longer run time on the 2xD with the new model, but nothing like the old one. I guess the one advantage of using the 4-5-6 cell drop-in is the availability of bigger lithium cells if you ever want more run time - you certainly wouldn't be restricted to 18650's.
