Looking at a few now, and if we compare Nitecore P12GT to Olight M1X Striker, which would have the better beam for self defense? According to the stats listed, the peak intensity of the nitecore is 3 times that of the Olight, and the beam distance is about double.
Both have ideal characteristics for what you ask.
But Nitecore is better because it has more cd's.
A torch with medium thrower characteristics is ideal.
To give an example, the Fenix PD35 TAC is very good for what you ask for (XP-L led, 10000 cd) but Fenix TK09 2016 or TK15 UE would be even better (the led becomes XP-L "HI" with 24000/26000 cd)
Also choose a light that has a rear power button (even better if it is protruding) this will allow you to turn it on quickly if necessary.
Choose compact flashlights so in case of need it's likely to be in your pocket and not at home in a drawer.
