Would it be better to use the old incan model or the new rebel model? Cost is not an issue. This would be using either an XR-E or XP-G.

I would go with the Mag rebel, it comes with a deeper reflector. Great for throwing. But you would have to recess the heatsink deep into the body of the Maglite to accommodate the deep reflector.

I'm going to use H22A's DHS heatsink which has a lip on the top edge. This would prevent me from being able to lower it further down the tube. Should I just stick to the regular incan Mag?

Then it would definitely be better to get the incan Mag.

If you are using an existing heatsink then, yes, the stock Mag would work best. As an alternative, you can have someone with a mill or lathe turn down the lip and it will sit inside of a Rebel Mag. I just happen to have a miniature mill at my disposal...

I've got an Incan that I'm going to do the ROP mod on, it's a 2D.
I am not very good with wires, so I went the easy root for my first try. I heard you needed a special tool to get the rebel LED out, or atleast be nimble and skilled LOL.
Starting with the Incan model gives you more options from what I've read

If youre doing a ROP mod then you're already replacing the reflector to to prevent heat damage, so just get the incan version because its $15

You can always to file away the edge & push the heat sink in deeper to fit Rebel Deep SMO.

This reflector is perfect bigger dies like SST-50 or 90, but will give tiny spot with XRE or XPG. Giving your led of choice, I would go with incan Mag with regular OP reflector to get a more useful sized hot spot.

The idea is to create throw (small spot = good). ;)

I too, have questions regarding a M@g mod.

1) Has anyone had lights modified with following two drop-ins side-by-side for comparisons?

and

I'm undecided on which to get. I'm looking for throw over flood, but if one is just way brighter than the other, I'd like to know.

2) What battery configuration would give me better run-time...a 6AA-2D adapter with Eneloops like mdocod builds (I am planning on building one of these myself from his plans) or 2x18650's?

Sorry, should have quoted CarpentryHero on his post which I was commenting on. But the comment still stands for any mod which youre replacing the reflector with something else.

Don't have side by side data but I've done several DX R2 5xCree to know that it throw better than P7. Also, the 5xCree module delivers 800 mA to each cree, total lumens >1200 vs P7 700~800 lumens.

Dan if you go with the XR-E R2 EZ 900, then you will and should get alot of throw. This is what I will do with my 2D Incan Mag and powered by 3 NiMH C cells Direct Drive I should get at least 2A.

The XR-E R2 can handle 2A really well.

The XP-G R5 might focus better to provide a tighter and prettier beam. It should throw too and whether it will throw more I dont know. I didnt go this route because it cant be driven Direct Drive like the XR-E. In my experience the XP-G R5s turn blue or give sub 200 lumens at around 2A.

good luck,

Thanks ma sha1! I've pretty much decided to go with the 5xCree after a little more research and seeing some beam shots of it. I still have to decide on batteries yet but I think I will build it with both setups (Nimh and LiON) and see what works best.

The newest mag led's can throw just about as far as my aspheric xre "d". But can focus. Should figure away to power an xpg/xre on the stock pedestal so you can still have the flood to spot zooming.

I own the Cree XR-E 5 X R2 module. It is dropped into an Ultrafire WF-500 Xenon Flashlight with no modding necessary. The host is made for 2 X 18650 3.7 Li-Ion cells, which I would recommend to power this beast. Originally I had intended to mod a 2 X D cell mag for this array, but decided to save it for an incandescent mod instead. The first time I powered it on I swear I giggled like a little kid! The ceiling bounce was so intense it lit my whole living room (With 16 ft. cathedral ceiling!). It is brighter than any light I own except my 35W HID spotlight! Which ever route you decide to take. I think you will enjoy this module.
