Hi all,

1st I want to thank PCC for helping me figure this out and putting up with all my craziness.

The Hosts: 2D Rebel Mag
The LED: XR-E R2 EZ900 (DX 20mm el cheappo)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15943
The Heatsink: 2in solid chunk of aluminum by PCC
Driver: For now Direct Drive

The Results:
  • With Deep Rebel Reflector Cut to fit and powered by 3 NiMH AA cells
  • The current was low but safe at just 1.4A.
  • The OTF numbers were 247 OTF and 220ish at 2~3minutes = really steady.
  • The lux was a whopping = 57,500 at 1m (actual reading done at 5m)
Notice how 3 screws hold down that 20mm star nice and tight for good heat transfer.
There is a tiny layer of AS5 between star and heatsink.

The Deep Rebel Reflector is actually clean, it just looks this way for the picture
but the throw was phenominal, untill.................

Now the new results

Peter was kind enough to install a Solarforce Masterpiece Reflector in there. The bezel was trimmed a bit to make it fit, but the heat transfer is now from the bezel all the way down to the heatsink.

While testing it against 2 different Dereelight Aspherical XR-E R2 lights this new light clearly has a hot spot 50% smaller or more. Yes, its that much tighter. The problem is the current doesnt stay put at 1.5A~2A.

At turn-on I get 2A off 3 NiMH C cells by Tenergy. Seconds later it stays put around 1.4A for a minute/or 2. Then at 5minutes its at 1.2A.....arghhhhhh

At 18minutes straight ( I topped it off again) 1.1A, so at least its not less then 1A.

The Results:
I dont have my meter or sphere anymore, but this has got to be way way way more then 65k lux and if I could regulate this light at 2A or 2.5A via driver from shinningbeam.com I might ask a buddy to test the results. Wait, I will definitely ask my buddy to test the results.

Here is the 2D Mag bezel PCC cut/trimmed down for me:

Here are the reflectors. Left~Right. Solarforce Masterpiece, Deep Mag Rebel, Stock incan Mag Reflector

Now the beamshot was taken in complete daylight with Iphone and the spot is actually about 60% smaller in person in large part due to the EZ900 die.

More news on this later....

Hey, buddy, LMK when you want to add the driver and we will make it happen. I think a 2A driver would be safer but it's up to you. You'll need to run Li-Ions in there instead of the NiMH cells but I think the results will be worth it.

U mentioned above that U have DBS R2 aspherical( am counting days for mine to come)...

Can U please compare beams side by side?

So this can outthrow commercial available aspherical flashlight like DBS or Tiablo A9?

Would be possible to make reflector that would suppress beam into one bright hotspot without spill?

No, it would not be possible. Spill is the forward radiation of light coming directly from the emitter and not bouncing off of a reflector. The light that is redirected by a reflector gives you the hotspot.

imagine a reverse cone reflector within the main reflector redict spill to throw, or simply cover up the spill, I think it's possible

It's possible, and commercially available from Cutter.

Place a lens in front of the LED that's just large enough to catch any light that won't reach the reflector. Select the focal length to focus at the same distance as the image off the reflector.

You should give the Lumapower Turbo-Force reflector a try. I get over 100,000 lux with mine at 1.4 Amps.

I will look into the purchase of that reflector by itself. Maybe it can be made to fit a Mag D size bezel too.

I was planning to do comparitive beamshoots at 100 plus yards on 3 lights:

  • TLS SMO 2.5in Reflector with XR-E R2 EZ900 at 210 OTF
  • TLS SMO 2.5in Reflector with XR-E R2 EZ1000 at 290 OTF
  • My 2D Mag w/ Rebel Deep Reflector and EZ900 at 220ish OTF
  • My 2D Mag w/Solarforce Masterpice Reflector and EZ900 at 220ish OTF
  • Dereelight Aspherical XR-E R2 EZ1000 (230ish OTF w/reflector)..
Stay tunned.

Not sure how big a Mag D bezel is....but Turbo-Force bezel is 2.7" Dia.

  • The TLS Turbo head is 2.4in
  • The Solarforce Masterpiece is around 2in
  • The Turbo-Force at 2.7in might be the biggest one.
  • Tiablo A10 is 2in or 53mm
The Mag head is 2in, so 52~53mm bezels are about the biggest it can fit. I am hoping to get an A10 R2 on trade soon and then if its taller then the Masterpiece I will probably use that or attempt to use it in a 2D Mag. I need a Nikon D3000 to capture better pictures too.

Height of the A10 and MPP1 reflector are the same. The A10 is about 1mm larger on outside diameter. The MPP1 is for all practical purposes a copy of the A10 reflector. The MPP1 reflector will drop right into the A10. I also turned the inside of MPP1 housing and had an A10 reflector in it for a while.

If that's the case then the A10 reflector won't fit a Mag head as the MPP1 reflector just fit after milling the Mag head about as far as I dared to. Any further and you risk cutting through the O-ring groove.

I got a hold of a TLS 2.5in bezel SMO Reflector and the inside diameter or reflector surface looks identical in size to the Solarforce Masterpiece.

Solarforce Masterpiece is always on the LEFT.

Hi big C,

How are you getting the 1.4 A current through your LED? I take it you are DD it?

With my Tiablo A10 DD mod I was only getting 1.3 A max off of a fresh 18650 cell, OK it's better than the 0.8 A max from the stock driven A10 but I was hoping for more, maybe I have too much resistance but it is only two wires straight from the battery to the chip?

My 2x18650 cell stock A10-G pulls around 1.8 A on fresh batteries, so this current must be OK for the light!

Steve.

Looks like a fun project, nice work BigC and PCC. Its good to see collaborative effort on a light, one guy may or may not have all the tools needed and in the CPF spirit some else does and helps out

The XR-E R2 can handle more current then 1.8A, alot more. I have never seen the stock heatsink on that A10, but you still might want to consider improving that before you add more current. In previous testing with other Mag builds more current was less lumens because the heatsink was not as impressive as this one. This is what is currently happening with my SST-50 and SST-90 Mags. Yeah: we may think they are brighter, but once I measure the OTF lumens its not the case.

Steve.

Steve,

I was direct driving this emitter and getting just 1.4A at the tail off 3 NiMH C cells, worst yet the current goes even lower after a couple seconds and stays around 1.1~1.2A. :mecry::poof::mecry::mecry:

Hopefully; by next week I will have this 2A driver installed:
http://theledguy.chainreactionweb.com/product_info.php?products_id=1243

Recall that at just 1.4 at turn-on my OTF numbers were 240ish with Deep Rebel reflector = 57k lux at 1m.

But

Now it will be regulated at 2A, so no drop in total watts. Additionally; the Solarforce Masterpiece reflector (wider and longer) offers a way way way tighter hot spot with more throw. So, I dont see why 300 Plus OTF and 70k or more lux is not possible.

Regards,
bigC
