Hello people
This is my first post....and going to be my first flashlight purchase :D
Anyway, I have been looking on this site for info about a good cheap (sub $25 off DX) LED flashlight. However I have had a case of information overload , there is almost to much information on here...

So I was wondering if you guys could help me out...
I am looking for a flashlight to mount on a .22LR for rabbit shooting out to about 100m at night, I have heard that I want a thrower for this...any suggestions?
Any help greatly appreciated :)

Welcome to CPF, Manual Man :)

We have a Budget Lights section here where members will be able to advise you, so I'm moving your enquiry there.

There are plenty of good value lights that are sub $25, and DX is definitely not the only place you will find them.

Thanks for that...(and sorry about the double thread...did not read the sentence about thread approval first time...)...as for DX, I am in New Zealand so the free world wide shipping comes in handy a lot...

DX and Kaidomain.com

And a few other places on the web , ebay can be good if you know the going rate , but its very easy to overpay on ebay ...

Do the legwork ...

What type of batteries are you looking at using? If you are resticted to AA, probably your best bet for a thrower under $25 is a Hugsby P31 off DX. For other battery types, there are a ton of options. Check out a review of the Hugsby here:

I don't know much about guns, what kind of impact does gun mounting put on a flashlight? Can these budget lights withstand it?

22lr is a has very low recoil. almost any flashlight should be able to withstand the shock of a 22lr. Unless it is a super light frame pistol or a super cheesy torch...

Thanks for the explanation. In that case, I think the op just has to just tell us what his battery preference is. His requirements are pretty easy otherwise.

Thanks for the replys guys....
Battery wise I am thinking...AA or most likely CR123/18650 (rechargables)
(though correct me if I'm wrong...CR123s and 18650s in flashlights are brighter and cost less due to power output of the battery?)
As for other preferences: I would prefer if it had 3 modes (high, medium and low, no SOS or strobe) and had a real output of around 200 lumen (or more :D)
Jonesing4wind is right about the recoil, .22LR is basically the lowest power rifle you can find, so it will not be a problem.

A p60 host and an r2 or xpg dropin should be good for you i think. The solarforce host is very popular.

You are going to have a hard time meeting your price requirement and the no strobe requirement if you need 3 modes.

If you can use a single mode DX XR-E R2 drop-in and a P60 host you should have no problem.

You can also order a 3 mode R2 but it will have a strobe mode.

The only way to get 3 modes and no strobe is to use a Thrunight drop-in and that will be $30 or so I believe (not offered on DX).

Add a $2 DX aspheric lens and you'll have a thrower.

Solarforce 3-mode R2 drop-in has only low, medium and high without any strobes and it's less than $15 (without a host). It should also be a good thrower.

If a 3 mode flashlight is too hard to come by then I will settle with 2 (high/low or high/medium)
Hows this for a p60 host? UltraFire WF-502B Cree R2-WC 250-Lumen LED Flashlight (DX: SKU.16178)....only $14 as well
...I'm guessing the 250-lumen is more like 150 tho...would this still be enough to throw out to 100m? (I could swap out the lens and reflector...)

Good to know about the Solarforce R2 drop-in. Do they have any 3 mode no strobe XP-G R5 drop-ins at that price?

Ok, this is what I have decided to do: P60 host (probably WF-502b) with a 300lm drop-in, (if not included in the drop-in...a smooth reflector as well)....now all I need to do is find the right price and drop-in
Thanks for the tips guys

The 502b is going to come with an XR-E R2 emitter (albeit with orange peel reflector), rated at 250 lumens. Of course, it's actually a little less out-the-front, but the 501/502 is a nice bright thrower. I have a bunch of them and they will light up trees over 100 yards away on a dark night.

You may eventually want something with more flood, too, so you might consider an XP-G R5 drop-in (something else I've done), and you'll get an equally bright (if not brighter) light (rated at 400 lumens) that covers a wider area. Great for bathing large areas in light from a small package.

I love the 501/502 platform, as it gives you lots of flexibility in a pocketable light.

Btw - I'd personally recommend rechargeable 18650's for the 501/502 as opposed to 2xRCR123's, but that's my opinion.
