P60 with throw

I just got a solarforce L2 and was wondering which dropin I should buy. I want a dropin that has a lot of throw. Any recommendations with a lot of throw? What are typical lux numbers for throwy p60 dropins? I know that the masterpiece head from solarforce would increase the throw considerably, but the head seems huge. Any other heads that will fit a solarfoce L2 and increase throw?

SST-50 throws less than XR-E even with smooth reflector.

PS. This is probably the best throwing D26 module.

Beamshots?

I'm looking.. not finding any yet.
How easy would it be to find a ~8000K R2 LED and get someone to swap it out with it?

Edit:
There should be harder driven modules.. Doesn't Nailbender make one at 1.2A w/ an optic available?

If you really want to get a lot of throw buy the 28mm aspheric lens they sell on DX and then black out the reflector. You will get mucho throw.

the XR-E is still king when it comes to throw but you give up a lot of useful spill as a result. that one from BGG seems outrageously priced but i've heard good things about it. i purchased SKU 05937 from DX last summer and its throw is unbelievable...almost on the same level as the Tiablo A9. its just a reflector but any XR-E will work well w/ it. my personal favorite is a Thrunite XP-G lamp at 1.5A but w/ a reflector i took off a DX XP-G. the throw is great but still has enough spill to remain practical. the Malkoff M30 & 60 both have a great balance of throw & moderate spill.

I have a Nailbender XP-G R5 w/smooth reflector. It has good throw and decent spill. It's a great drop-in for general use. 3.6-8.4V w/memory.

It's not a pure throw light, but you can always add an aspheric lens.

have you found an XP-G/aspheric configuration that works well? everything i've tried looks more like it belongs in a dance club.

The dance club effect is because you are leaving in the reflector I'm guessing?

There is another trick that works well for my purposes but everyone likes different thing (spill or whatever). Use Scotch translucent "Magic" tape and mask out the back of the lens in a " # " pattern. You will retain the throw and diffuse the ugly beam and will now have a pretty beam. :)

I'm experimenting with P60 drop-ins now, looking for throw. I'm getting around 6800-6900 lux with SST-50's and about 6900 with an M60. I'll have a Dereelight 1.2A pill in a few days, and hopefully my R2 emitters will arrive to go into a 1.4A pill already built and waiting. I'll post the results soon.....

I have the Solarforce MP Pro 1 with a UCL and I'm getting 54,000 lux. It is awesome. Will be building a 1.4A pill for it too. Based on preliminary testing of the 1A vs 1.4A drivers I hope to be getting over 65,000 lux with it. It is odd looking on a 6P host, but looks great on a Z2 and fits the hand really fine. It is a bit heavy (10 oz loaded), but it would make a great "hammer" for anything you choose to crack open. I consider it my Number one Tactical light. Can't imagine a better light as a defensive tool with it's blinding hot-spot, heft, and extremely sharp bezel.

Smooth reflector would be your best option, maybe with a SST-50 LED.

Probably right, considering how small the reflector is. I got slightly better lux with the OP reflector on SST-50 (6900 vs 6800). Hard to say why...Maybe the reflectors have different parabola's??

Mind I ask which SST-50 drop-in this is?

Same lux as the M60 eh... That's great! Looking forward to the other results - that RRT-0 is a thrower isn't it? Should test that too.

I don't have one, but one of them custom Maglites would work well. You wouldn't have to use the bezel up-close instead, swinging the back end around, adding a bit of distance for the user. Would be heftier too!

It is the Ultrafire 550 lumen drop-in from Battery Junction. The RRT-0 did 7600. I wasn't very impressed with the RRT-0. Spoiled I guess from my D-mini's. Gonna be hard to get good throw from a P60. I'm thinking about just going for strong flood with an SST-50. My D-mini VX-TF will do 18,000 lux from a 1.45" head. Doesn't sound like a big difference to the SF bezel dia. of 1.25" but it's a huge difference in throw. Of course the P60 is quite restricted in reflector depth also. But might as well test it, I'm gonna use the pills in my aspherics anyway.

Nah, too big. I'd never have it on me. I can put the MP Pro in my coat pocket. Maybe a Z3 would be an improvement in reach. The Z2 really is quite a "swinger" with the narrow body and the rubber grip rings at the back. And with a McClicky switch you can hold it in a swinging grip and still activate the light with your pinky finger.

Any other head other then the masterpiece that would fit the L2 and make it throw more?

I have not researched a lens for it, sorry. It is perfect for my application with the drop-in.....so I didn't take any further. I picked it up at the DFW Flashapalooza after seeing how much brighter it was than the stock 6P led.

Hmm that's not bad!
I was wondering cause Nailbender's 2.8A SST-50 (6500K) was definitely > Quark Turbo which is > E2DL which I heard = M60 '
The spot from that drop-in was overwhelming (& huge).

That's true. I was thinking of one of these I saw over at custom BST (@ the top).
(You could activate one of these too in a swinging grip with your pinky - albeit in a more natural overhand grip)
