why was [carrying the U2] a mistake

You trimmed the part of the post in which he mentioned holding an E1L in his mouth. The U2 is a bit big for that.

I'm a paramedic from Germany and I own a L4 since a few months. There's nothing else to mention except I really love it.
Maybe get an additional 1-cell body like the E1x or an aleph and use it with rechargeables, the 20 minutes runtime are adequate in most cases.
I also own an McE2s but it isn't really necessary imho and I recommend everyone to use a penlight instead of your Surefire...
