Can anybody identify this tree?

This flowering tree is in the neighbour's backyard, but right next to the fence between our two backyards.
The smaller, larger-leafed tree directly in front of it in this photograph is a persimmon.

What got me curious is that the tree in question is flowering in mid-August (photograph taken on 08-15-08).
Does anybody know what this plant might be?

It's crape myrtle (basham's party pink)
But! not 100% sure.
