Two members, one a mod even, are rather rude, obnoxious, condescending know it alls. The poor attitude seems to cause others to Rea t poorly and push back until the mod decides to lock the thread. Whatever happened to being polite and helpful instead of, "you're wrong. Just listen to me, I know better." I'm sure that's driven off a few members as well. Matter of fact does not have to equal rude or condescending.
I don't know who you mean, but, what I always consider as a possible explanation when someone in authority says something like "You're wrong, just listen to me" etc....is that I might be wrong, and I should listen.
It doesn't mean I change my mind per se, but, it does mean that someone who MIGHT know more than me is expressing frustration at what they at least perceive as a mistake on my part. In the short hand, abbreviated time frames many people need to deal with, and, the problems that arise in a forum day after day, week after week...some people feel like they've said the same thing a million times, and, eventually, they drop the pleasantries and cut to the chase.
I saw a microcosm of this over by Great Adventure in NJ. At a gas station, when the park opened, people would pull in and ask directions to the park. These people are not getting gas mind you, just wanting directions.
The first dozen or so times, the attendant would say stuff akin to, OK, continue north until you hit 295 south, and then stay right, because they have 4 lanes exiting to the park.
After that, it was truncated to more along the lines of, that way to 295 S.
After a few hours, the guy made a sign with directions...and would point to it.
After that, people would STILL ask directions, he'd point at the sign progressively more pointedly, and visibly more annoyed.
After THAT it was READ THE EFFING SIGN!
The people who asked the first 100 times or so received a pleasant reply, which, over time, was progressively more curt. The last people to ask would look at each other and say stuff like "What T F is HIS problem, I was just asking directions fer chrissakes...."
I think its the same for mods....the posters feel like WTF, I was just...
But the mods on forums are answering or responding to the same issues, such as about modifying a car's safety equipment - over and over again, and, I'm sure, its tiresome to explain it all in full over and over again....etc.
Anyway, its human nature.
We need moderation in forums, and, people are all we have to do it...so, personally, I consider it par for the course. At least it is on the many many forums I am on.
In sports, its also analogous to the officials...they may not get every call right, but, the game's a mess w/o them....and you can get thrown out for arguing the call.
