Two members, one a mod even, are rather rude, obnoxious, condescending know it alls. The poor attitude seems to cause others to Rea t poorly and push back until the mod decides to lock the thread. Whatever happened to being polite and helpful instead of, "you're wrong. Just listen to me, I know better." I'm sure that's driven off a few members as well. Matter of fact does not have to equal rude or condescending.

You need to consider why folks are chosen to be mods on all types of forums, it's seems that those folk that read every thread and comment on most, they usually have very high post scores and are chosen.

There is no point in choosing infrequent visitors to a forum as they aren't around enough to moderate the forum.

It's the same with all forums, however this one is mostly civil compared to some others that I frequent.

I don't know who you mean, but, what I always consider as a possible explanation when someone in authority says something like "You're wrong, just listen to me" etc....is that I might be wrong, and I should listen.

It doesn't mean I change my mind per se, but, it does mean that someone who MIGHT know more than me is expressing frustration at what they at least perceive as a mistake on my part. In the short hand, abbreviated time frames many people need to deal with, and, the problems that arise in a forum day after day, week after week...some people feel like they've said the same thing a million times, and, eventually, they drop the pleasantries and cut to the chase.

I saw a microcosm of this over by Great Adventure in NJ. At a gas station, when the park opened, people would pull in and ask directions to the park. These people are not getting gas mind you, just wanting directions.

The first dozen or so times, the attendant would say stuff akin to, OK, continue north until you hit 295 south, and then stay right, because they have 4 lanes exiting to the park.

After that, it was truncated to more along the lines of, that way to 295 S.

After a few hours, the guy made a sign with directions...and would point to it.

After that, people would STILL ask directions, he'd point at the sign progressively more pointedly, and visibly more annoyed.

After THAT it was READ THE EFFING SIGN!

The people who asked the first 100 times or so received a pleasant reply, which, over time, was progressively more curt. The last people to ask would look at each other and say stuff like "What T F is HIS problem, I was just asking directions fer chrissakes...."

I think its the same for mods....the posters feel like WTF, I was just...

But the mods on forums are answering or responding to the same issues, such as about modifying a car's safety equipment - over and over again, and, I'm sure, its tiresome to explain it all in full over and over again....etc.

Anyway, its human nature.

We need moderation in forums, and, people are all we have to do it...so, personally, I consider it par for the course. At least it is on the many many forums I am on.

:D

In sports, its also analogous to the officials...they may not get every call right, but, the game's a mess w/o them....and you can get thrown out for arguing the call.

Very well said(as always TEEJ) i am new here,so already if i see a lot of repetition i could imagine that it would wear thin pretty quick, topics of self defence, recommend me a light,18650 related safety which is all covered numerous times.

Other forums i have been active for many years(one moderated),and i tend to get used to it,still give time, after all if everyone used the search (just 1 example) there would be no life or as many posts, also some "same" questions can open up new answers too and discussions .

Hats off to the mods, they do a very good job and such a large site, sometimes straight to the point just works rather than reasons/explanations which take time, mods also have a life away from here as with other sites so long posts are not always an option due to time/commitments and maybe replied/locked 1000 times before.....

I look at it as personalities,i try and take a more fun side to things, some times i hold back(be it right or wrong) on some threads.

Also there is the "lost in translation" and humour differences across the oceans.....
Personalities, just a few plucked up as examples to me....

TEEJ-very diplomatic, very good at explaining with patience and gives up time doing so
mcnair-The grump man, straight to the point, but in banter, makes the site imo interesting too and likes anoraks:p
capolini-deep,to the point,strong opinions,passionate on his interested(and emotions  )
me-mr neutral,maybe diplomatic a little,easy going,does not want to offend anyone(could say boring too :p)

For me be it right or wrong everyone is entitled to their opinion,if it is ridiculous then being challenged constructively imho stands for better than simply shot down.

So many members,so many backgrounds,trains of thought,personalities..........

Just my 2 pence(as i am UK):p

:twothumbs

... and more often than not, people (even mods) respond in the same manner they are approached and/or addressed. In other words... obnoxious begets obnoxious. Just sayin'.

And on another note... you've been around for quite some time now - longer than I have even! So why is it you still don't know the rules of the forums? Hmmm...

Here's a refresher of Rule #8:

8. Whining and complaining about the rules

CPF has rules. Just about every forum on the internet has some kind of rules. All of you are here at CPF because of how it is run and the atmosphere. There are other forums you can go to but you choose to come here. The rules exist in order to keep things running smoothly and to maintain the atmosphere that you all enjoy when you come here looking for information or to share information. You all have seen what can happen when everyone is just left to do what they want. Total chaos and disorder. How do you expect to be able to find the information you're looking for if you don't know where to start looking for it? Should we just have one big forum and you can post any topic you want in it and use any kind of language and insult other members and just generally run amok? Of course, that is a ridiculous notion. And that is why we have rules. So that your experiences on CPF are pleasant and informative and fun.

The rules exist because someone at sometime abused CPF and rules had to be made. If everyone comported themselves as mature adults, we wouldn't have to have rules. But unfortunately, that is not how things are.

The moderators and administrators of CPF are around in order to keep order. Do not whine or complain about the rules and do not abuse the moderators or administrators for enforcing the rules. It is very disruptive to the board when gripes take over a thread. Take them off the board in either private messages or email. The alternative is to go and start your own forum and set your own rules.

And on that note... Thread closed.

One more thing...

Thanks to all others who responded to the OP with rational and respectful posts. YOU all are why CPF is the great place it is... :)
