Re: holly molly molly wolly the new xbox is insa

wow, 3 processors? will this run like it's 9ghz or what??!?
IBM made processors?

That's a little overkill I'd say. Seems like it would cost a fortune!! How much are these going to be? 10,000? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I want 3 processors for my PC damnit! !!

Re: holly molly molly wolly the new xbox is insa

wow that is expensive!!! That's like buying a whole complete computer now a days. I don't think I'd spend that much on just a game console... I prefer mouse+keyboard now anyways! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif So much more precise!

With three CPU cores running at 3.2g hz each but only 512mb of ram, is the memory going to be a choke point for throughput?

Ibm makes great processors! They have for MANY years! My personal favorates are in IBM's RS6000 series of servers. They don't run on the X86 architecture that Windows pc's run on though. Most IBM processors wind up running some flavor of Unix or Linux.

Apple G5 machines use IBM processors http://www.apple.com/g5processor/ibmprocess.html

Those apple machines are pretty awesome for people that can afford them and don't mind having less software available to them. Linus Travolds (maker of linux) switched to a mac pc... but installed linux on it. IBM processors are probably the best/fastest on the market right now, they just havn't gotten much attention because windows doesn't run on them.

I very much look forward to the XBOX 360, will probalby get one. I currently have a HTPC frontend PC which the XBOX is almost certain to replace.

teststrips, I knew they made processors, but was not aware of that high mhz, or that MS would go for them over Intel. I always thought of MS and Intel being buddy buddy.

Re: holly molly molly wolly the new xbox is insa

I like the concept of the Xbox for several reasons:

All that technology and horsepower does basically one thing... push polygons. PCs have to do everything and that involves a ton of added overhead (Win XP) The Xbox should have a much more streamlined operating system built for the exact hardware it uses (like Apple) The game developers write for one system, not worried if you are using single core or dual core CPUs, 256, 512, 1GB or 2GB of memory, what type of video card you use, how much memory the video card has, what operating sytem you are using etc.

The second reason is the Xbox has a longer life, those dual 6800s in SLI will be crushed by next year and the upgrade cycle continues. The only way to get dual 6800's for $300 is by knife point! $100/yr to have awesome graphics is a very cheap price to pay. Heck, my Asus X700 Pro 256MB VIVO card ran me $200!

The third reason is if my kids want to game, jump on the Xbox and have a good time. Leave my HTPC alone! They can and do game on their computer, but now they both can play games at the same time and not use my computer.

The forth reason is no virus problems, spam, malware and all the other junk plaguing computers. No 250MB of memory sucked up to load anti-virus, anti-spyware and all the other junk loading.

Next spring, I will make my decision and probably get an Xbox 360. Mainly to simplify my life, keep my kids of my computer, save serious bucks in the long run and save electricity.

Re: holly molly molly wolly the new xbox is insa

With any luck at all, Xbox will choke to death on it's media. Sony just announced that the new PlayStation will be fed from Blu-Ray disks. Thats 25GB in type 1 mode, 50Gb in type 2 mode, and probably 100GB per disk within a year.

Eat light, MS.

Of course, the best system does not mean it will be successful -- VHS beat Beta-Max in spite of the fact that it was an inferior spec. Since MS is really just a marketing firm (and very good at it) there is always the possibility that they may drive the superior spec into the ground. Like the guy said in Terminator, "It's what they do."

For more on Blu-Ray, check this out:

Re: holly molly molly wolly the new xbox is insa

IBM is making the processors for all three of the next systems, X-Box, PS2, and the new Nintendo.

Sony had better hope that Blu-Ray does become the new standard instead of HD-DVD. It's the next big standard war, and not just for video games. Movies, and computer media. But then it's about the games, not just the hardware.
