Anyone else remember that one really Dark and Disturbing episode where one of the train engines decided to be disobedient because he didn't like taking orders from people? Yeah, the Mayor and the train crew backed him up into a short, dead-end tunnel; bricked up the entrance. And, just left him there to rot. No, he wasn't back the next episode. That particular sentient train engine was never seen again, never referenced in any other episodes. They just left him there with that sad face as they bricked him in. Taught the other train engines a valuable lesson.
